GAH!

Posted by Greg under: Webby .

One of the posts I deleted earlier today was half boring stuff about Wordpress 2.5, the software I use for blogging and maintaining this site. It is good but has some serious shortfalls. I still can’t work out why when I change something in the header or sidebar it sometimes takes half an hour to work, sometimes does it instantly, and sometimes doesn’t do it at all.

I’ve tried adding and subtracting a lot of stuff from the sidebar in particular, and it’s driving me crazy! I deleted a lot of stuff on the weekend without knowing I had, and now it’s all gone again just because I put a facebook link in! I think I fixed it, but I won’t know for ages.

It is, however, legitimately free software so I can’t complain too loud.

My new rule for when something annoys me is to do something or write about something nice to balance things out. So I’m going to eat some peanut butter on toast with the peanut butter warmed under the grill till it bubbles.

Mmm.

UPDATE: Sidebar fixed. Burnt toast. Second lot was marvelous. Here’s a nice video.
UPDATE 2: Now all the writing embiggened. I’m not going to even TRY to fix it.
UPDATE 3: Tried to fix it. Headings still embiggened.
UPDATE 4: Strangely, decided to enable manual pinging for facebook add-on. Because that would be SO much simpler than removing the embiggening.
UPDATE 5: Fixed. Total time: 3 HOURS.

I was recently thinking of switching to wordpress but it was going to be too much too learn…I always find it frustrating that different blog models have different cool features. LJ has great comment tracking features, blogger’s interface is super easy and now has future posting just like wordpress, webcomics nation has great archive and posting features, and wordpress has great hosting options…argh!!

It’s actually usually quite good. I don’t know how I managed to muck things up quite as much as I have – a talent?

I think I might just have to get used to the big big headings for my links. Maybe…

The issue turned out to be a conflict between css stylesheet and wordpress 2.5 “widgets”… so removing the facebook badge turned out to be the answer after all.
